I don’t know about you, but for me ’tis the season for simplicity, and this cacao latte is just the afternoon pick-me-up I need. As you can see from the photo above, it gets pretty lazy around here during quarantine. That’s my cat Minnie in the background there. Catnapping is only one of her work-from-home duties during our balmy 72-degree winter. Her other occupations include property appraiser of soft pillows, botanist specializing in garden snakes, and, of course dirt-bather extraordinaire.
But back to cacao lattes. Let me explain why I love this one.
Raw cacao
While I love both Dutch process cocoa and raw cacao powder, I’m using raw cacao here for its high nutritional content, including manganese, copper, and magnesium. Dutch cocoa has a more traditionally chocolaty flavor, so I prefer this one in puddings and lattes that include espresso.
Cacao latte recipe
I’m adapting this recipe from Wendy Rowe’s almond chocolate milkshake from her book Eat Beautiful: Food and Recipes to Nourish Your Skin from the Inside Out. Rowe’s recipe combines skin-healthy almond milk with cacao superfood. The recipe, however, called for almond meal, which I left out in favor of a silkier texture.
Here’s my (adapted) ingredient list:
- 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
- 1 teaspoon honey
- ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk

Description
This superfood-filled latte is a great alternative to an afternoon espresso drink. Lightly sweet and quite rich, it’s a wonderful drink for winter.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
- 1 teaspoon honey
- ¾ cup almond milk
Instructions
Stovetop Version
- Put the almond milk in a small saucepan and heat over medium.
- When the milk is steaming and just begins bubbling, pour it into your blender along with the other ingredients.
- Blend on high for about a minute or until foam forms on top.
Milk Steamer Version
- Put the almond milk in a designated milk steamer on the less foamy setting. Blend and heat the milk.
- Pour the milk into the blender along with the other ingredients.
- Blend on medium low until just incorporated. It should still retain some bubbles.
Notes
I highly recommend using almond milk for the way its flavor melds nicely with cacao, but feel free to experiment with other milks, too!
Dutch process cocoa (or whatever you have) can also work but may be less nutritious.
